STRONG GROWTH EXPECTATIONS

Malaysian economy is supported by diversified export, dynamic service sector, good infrastructures, investments suopprted by expansion of local financial market.

Growth was strong in both 2017 and 2018 driven by internal demand, good export performance around 75% of total GDP. Export benefits from the hydrocarbon prices, as 20% of total exports. Malaysia also exports high value added-value manufactured producst, like semi-conductors and other electronic products (39% of total export). Country also benefits from growing in integration in the regional value chain thanks to ongoing membership in the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN). The sectors linked to tourism are expected to continue to expand. Despite level of household debt, private consumptions is the main contributor to growth.

On the other hand, there are some weakness, like reliance on external demand, budget income dependent on performances in the gas and oil sector, very high private debt levels, erosion of price competitiveness due to high labor costs, regional disparities, ethnic and religious disputes can affect results.
