International Days

International Sweatpants Day

International Sweatpants Day is celebrated annually on January 21. Of course, this might not be feasible if your school or workplace has a dress code. Did you know sweatpants have been around for nearly a century? These casual, soft trousers were originally created for athletes, prioritizing comfort. Made from stretchy knitted jersey fabric, they typically feature an elastic waistband, a drawstring, and sometimes elasticized cuffs. Outside the U.S.A, they’re often referred to as tracksuit bottoms, track pants, or trackies.

The History

The history of sweatpants dates back to 1882, when the French company Le Coq Sportif, specializing in clothing, footwear, and sports equipment, was established. In the 1920s, founder Émile Camuset designed simple gray knitted jersey sweatpants specifically for athletes, prioritizing functionality over style.

In 1926, Russell Athletic, an American clothing manufacturer, revolutionized sweatpants by replacing the wool jersey material with soft, breathable cotton. A decade later, Champion, another American brand, introduced innovative anti-shrink and heat-resistant designs. In 1952, Champion launched its iconic Reverse Weave sweatpants line.

During the 1950s, sweatpants remained a niche item, largely restricted to gyms and university campuses. While often paired with sweatshirts, sweatpants didn’t gain the same popularity, as sweatshirts were adorned with college or university logos, making them more socially acceptable for casual wear with khakis or jeans.

In the 1960s and 1970s, sweatpants gained broader acceptance, thanks to athletes whose image became synonymous with sweatpants and sweatshirts. By the 1980s, sweatpants were embraced by hip-hop culture, with rap stars popularizing them in music videos and as streetwear staples.

The rise of social media in the 21st century brought athletic wear, including sweatpants, into mainstream fashion. Their association with fitness, comfort, and a relaxed lifestyle led to a surge in popularity, inspiring designers to create new styles. International Sweatpants Day, introduced in 2010, is celebrated annually on January 21 as a tribute to the unbeatable comfort and versatility of sweatpants.

Why We Celebrate International Sweatpants Day

  • Sweatpants are always fashionable: no matter the era, year, season, or climate, sweatpants remain a staple in style. Whether loose, baggy, or form-fitting, they adapt to any occasion—be it casual gatherings or even tech industry events.
  • Sweatpants are great for workouts: designed to retain heat close to your skin, sweatpants keep your muscles warm and help increase your body temperature, enhancing calorie burn during exercise. They also provide a layer of protection against the sun when you’re exercising outdoors.
