The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established in 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Currently members are 10, with Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia joined in the next years.
ASEAN purposes are:
  1. Accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural developmentTo promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter;
  2. Promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields;
  3. Provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research
  4. Collaborate more effectively for the greater utilisation of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade
  5. To promote Southeast Asian studies
  6. To maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organisations
ASEAN principals are:
  1. Mutual respect for the independence
  2. The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference
  3. Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another;
  4. Settlement of differences or disputes by peaceful manner;
  5. Renunciation of the threat or use of force; and
  6. Effective cooperation among themselves.

ASEAN, as regional body, is working on both national responses and regional cooperation with a close link with World Health Organization (WHO) starting from March 11 2020 when COVID-19 was decleared a worldwide pandemic, after January 30th when virus was stated as Public Health Emergency of International Concern. In January, already six ASEAN Member States had already confirmed their first cases and by late March, all 10 Member States of ASEAN had been affected by the pandemic.
Immediately, ASEAN Member states, put in place national prevention and control strategies with health measures, like use of masks, personal hygiene facing difficulties in how put in place proper actions. Regional health mechanisms were activated promptly to support national measures and to respond to the gaps as well as promote knowledge and information exchange in a timely manner. Strong cooperation and coordination between Member States and partners.are currently key factors.
