International Days

International Mother Languages Day

Every year on February 21st the International Mother Languages Day is observed globally. The idea of celebrating this day was proposed by Bangladesh at first and then institutionalized in 2000 by the UNESCO.

The aim is to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity: mother languages are essential, even in a globalized world as the one we live in. They are part of the history of a country that must be preserved, and they contribute in preserving tolerance and respect among countries.

However, data show that more and more traditional languages are disappearing; multicultural societies, however, can only exist if these are preserved.

That’s why a growing attention on this issue has been seen recently by national education systems, that started to strengthen their classes in local language. And of course, the contribution of technology to bring back these languages will be fundamental: its role can help in providing new opportunities and address the challenges these languages face. This year’s celebration is precisely focused on this last point.

At SkyMinder, the presence of international teams requires the use of a common language like English. However, cultural differences are at the basis of discussion, innovation and creativity. We give value to multiculturalism, and thus to multicultural languages, that is everyday at the basis of growth in our teams.
