International Days

International Day of Zero Waste

2023 marks the first year in which we observe the International Day of Zero Waste, celebrated on the 30th of March.

At the end of 2022, The United Nations General Assembly formally acknowledged the relevance of promoting a collective effort in minimizing and preventing waste, and encouraging foster sound waste management.

The goals of this attempt include reducing pollution, mitigating the climate crisis, conserving biodiversity, enhancing food security and improving human health. Zero-waste initiatives can help to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns.

From a global perspective, international trade and global value chains have a significant role in the waste production, mostly regarding plastic pollution. A contemplated solution could be circularity: not only it would benefit the environment, but it could also generate massive economic gains.

Learn more about this day on the United Nations’ website, and visit the World Economic Forum’s website to find out more on the role of trade in ending plastic pollution.
