International Days

International Beer Day

Celebrated on the first Friday of August, this year International Beer Day falls on August 2nd.

It originated in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California, with the aim of gathering friends, honoring those responsible for brewing and serving industry, and celebrating global beer culture.

The history of beer dates back to ancient civilizations, where women initially brewed it for religious purposes, and began to be a staple in the diet.  While Greece and Rome preferred wine, beer found popularity among the Celts and Germans. Later, European monks improved brewing techniques in the Middle Ages, introducing hops, and the ingredients were standardized with the 1516 Bavarian Purity Law. The Industrial Revolution enhanced brewing technology, and the late 20th century saw the rise of the craft beer movement, focusing on quality and innovation.

Beer is categorized into two main types, based on yeast and fermentation process. While lagers need a low temperature, long time fermentation and bottom-fermenting yeasts, ales are fermented at warm temperature, over a relatively short period and with top-fermenting yeasts. However, some beers are classified as hybrids, as they incorporate features of both categories.

International Beer Day is all about celebrating the social aspects of drinking beer and appreciating the craftsmanship behind it. So, how can you do it?

  • Drink some beer with your friends: one of the purposes of this day concerns socializing.
  • Search for some events: local pubs may host something!
  • Explore beers from different cultures.
  • Show appreciation to brewers and bartenders.
