Sacks and bags of jute: import and export

Due to their resistance and eco-friendly nature, sacks and bags of jute are widely used in various applications, for example for shopping and for storage in warehouses. They come in many types: they can have wooden handles, cotton webbing, leather handles, drawstrings. Jute has a long-standing importance in human history: indeed, is one of the most ancient textile materials and was commonly used for packaging colonial food such as coffee and cocoa. Coming from Asia, this material is very resistant to humid climate and was introduced in Europe only in the 18th century, when it began to be used for new industries like fishing, construction, and weaponry.

In 2022, Sacks and bags of jute were the world's 3313th most traded product, with a total trade of $332M.

In 2022 the top exporter of Sacks and bags of jute was India ($158M), ahead of Bangladesh ($68.7M), China ($16.2M), Nepal ($15.3M), and Pakistan ($9.8M). Whereas the top importer was Ghana ($47.6M), followed by India ($37.4M), Côte d'Ivoire ($33.1M), Netherlands ($20.6M), and United States ($13.3M).

Both export and import leaders are very clear and strong trade relationships are suggested, as well as the origin being predominantly South Asian.

In this graphic we can observe that India and Bangladesh are confirmed as major exporters, as they have a significant presence in many countries. Furthermore, India, as an importer, shows a significant regional trade with South Asia even though the market is diversified due to the presence of Côte d’Ivoire, whereas in the Netherlands and in the United States a balanced approach is visible. China is the third exporter but its share in these countries is very small.

  1. Ghana (14.3%): 96.4% India, 0.022% China
  2. India (11,3%): 41.8% Bangladesh, 40.7% Nepal, 12.4% Côte d’Ivoire, 1.87% United States, 0.34% China
  3. Côte d’Ivoire (9.95%): 87.2% India, 11.9% Bangladesh
  4. Netherlands (6.21%): 46.8% India, 45% Bangladesh, 2.53% China, 0.017% Pakistan
  5. United States (4.01%): 55.8% India, 13.2 Bangladesh, 13% China, 7.79% Côte d’Ivoire, 0.94% Pakistan

As we can see in this graphic every exporter’s market except Nepal is diversified across different countries: the most heterogeneous in terms of percentage are those of India and Bangladesh, whereas the others are more monopolistic, focusing on both emerging and established markets in small percentages.

  1. India (47.4%): 29.2% Ghana, 18.3% Côte d’Ivoire, 6.13% Netherlands, 4.71% United States, 3.3% Sudan, 2.68% Australia, 2% Germany
  2. Bangladesh (20.7%): 22.7% India, 13.5% Netherlands, 8.93% Indonesia, 5.71% Côte d’Ivoire, 2.71% Germany, 2.57% United States, 2.29% China, 1.35% Mozambique
