Roses: import and export

On Valentine’s Day, what’s more romantic than a bouquet of red roses? Symbolizing romance, passion, sensuality, and love, red roses are just part of the different species of these ancient flowers.

According to the discovery of fossil evidences, roses are 35 million years old and their cultivation started around 5,000 years ago, probably in China. Part of the Rosaceae family, roses come now in more than 30,000 varieties, with different colors and shapes.

In the Roman period, roses became the symbol of the excesses of the Romans, who associated them with love, beauty, purity and passion. In the following centuries, the popularity of roses seemed to rise and fall depending on the gardening trends of the time.

Today, roses can be grown in every country where the climate allows it. Despite a trade decline of -3.78% from the $2.97B of 2019, in 2020 these flowers were the 1007th most traded product in the world. With a total trade of $2.86B, their trade represents 0.017% of the total trade of the world.

In 2020, the countries that exported this product the most were the Netherlands ($946M), Ecuador ($625M), Kenya ($503M), Colombia ($350M), and Ethiopia ($151M). In the same year, the United States ($522M), the Netherlands ($491M), Germany ($353M), Russia ($215M), and the United Kingdom ($205M) were the top importers.

Between 2019 and 2020, the exports of roses grew the fastest in Belgium ($38.2M), Belarus ($19.7M), Ethiopia ($10.2M), China ($1.84M), and France ($1.14M), while the Netherlands ($39.1M), Lithuania ($5.83M), Italy ($3.93M), Ukraine ($3.38M), and Trinidad and Tobago ($3.23M) were the countries were the imports grew the most.
