Romania is the number 47 economy in the world in terms of GDP (current US$), the number 41 in total exports, the number 38 in total imports, and the number 29 most complex economy according to the Economic Complexity Index (ECI). Based on 2019 data, the World Bank classified Romania as a high-income country for the first time. This is an important development for investment rating decisions and for accession negotiations to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Although, the economy contracted by 4.7% in the second half of 2020 and turnover in trade and services also decreased by 17 % in the same time frame due to pandemic, the high-frequency indicators point to a relatively quick rebound.
