Pumpkins: import and export

Images of leaves falling from the trees, soft sweaters and hot teas are usually used to represent the fall season, but there is one more item that symbolizes autumn: pumpkins.
Most people recognize pumpkins as big, round and orange fruits, but instead they can have different shapes and colours. Part of the gourd family, this product can be used in the kitchen to prepare different serving dishes.
Pumpkins also represent an important symbol in different cultures. In fact, hundreds of years ago, Irish people carved these fruits as a Halloween tradition, following an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack.
Native of Central America and Mexico, pumpkins were then exported in the other continents, except for Antarctica, where they are still planted and greatly appreciated by the consumers. In 2020 the pumpkin’s trade generated a total of $1.59B, with exports up to 17.2% over the previous year.
In 2020 the top exporters of pumpkins, fresh or chilled, were Mexico ($537M), Spain ($503M), New Zealand ($59.2M), Turkey ($57.2M), and the Netherlands ($54.9M). In the same year, the United States ($508M), France ($194M), Germany ($185M), United Kingdom ($94.8M), and Japan ($71.9M) were the top importers of this vegetable.
Moreover, between 2019 and 2020 countries like Spain ($121M), Mexico ($87.5M), South Africa ($7.39M), Netherlands ($7.09M), and New Zealand ($5.73M) have seen the fastest growth of exports of this gourd.
