Printed atlases and topographical maps in book form: import and export

Atlases are collections of maps that present not only geographical borders but also political and social boundaries. Topographical maps are graphic representations characterized by the presence of elevation contours lines that show the Earth’s surface, including cultural, hydrographical, relief and vegetational features.

Atlases and topographical maps are products that need to be constantly updated due to natural or man-made changes. Mankind has always felt the urge to take control over the space around: therefore, maps have been made for strategical, political, practical, and travelling purposes. Through maps we can explore lands and move mindfully, in addition to establishing legal boundaries and ownership.

In 2022 they were the world’s 5276th most traded product with a total trade of $23.1M.

The major importer in 2022 was Germany with a trade of £3.52M, ahead of the United States ($2.42M), Austria ($1.91M), France ($1,88M) and United Kingdom ($1.67M). Whereas as regards the top exporters Italy takes the first place with a trade of $3.17M, followed by United Kingdom ($2.93M), Germany ($2.83M), China ($1.48M) and United States ($1.47M).

In this graphic it’s possible to notice that the top importer, Italy, is not uniformly spread since is the largest source for Germany but not as much for the other countries; whereas Germany represents the highest percentage of exports for Austria but does not hold the second place overall due to United Kingdom, which has a modest percentage but it’s well-distributed across multiple countries.

  • Germany: 64% Italy; 3.82% United States; 1.54% United Kingdom; 1.46% China
  • United States: 41.5% Canada; 29% United Kingdom; 3.19% United Arab Emirates; 2.47% China; 1.65% Germany; 0.92% Italy

  • United Kingdom: 40.6% United Arab Emirates; 18.9% China; 5.39% United States; 3.02% Italy

Through this graphic the previous one is confirmed: for example, Italy and Germany have their highest export percentages respectively to Germany and Austria. Furthermore, the presence in the graphic is not limited to the group of top importers, as we can observe that China, Australia and Canada have significant percentages (more or less high) in many countries.
