The first cameras date back to the 17th century, but it was in in the 19th century that the early film cameras were created. Film photography is based on a system that uses a roll of light-sensitive film placed in the camera, which captures an impression when it is exposed to light. Films can have one or more layers of silver halide crystals, which absorb different amounts of light and are sensitive to a different color.
Today, the many creative opportunities that film cameras offer, their high quality, and their affordability made it possible to film photography to experience a renaissance, especially among young people. In 2020, photographic film was the 801st most traded product of the world, with a total trade of $1.44B that represents 0.0086% of total world trade.
In the same year, United States ($456M), Japan ($330M), Belgium ($178M), China ($147M), and Malaysia ($67.8M) were the top exporters of photographic film, while the top importers were China ($561M), United States ($170M), South Korea ($128M), Chinese Taipei ($94.6M), and Japan ($54.4M).
