Perfumes: a look at the market

Perfumes have a long history. The term was derived from the Latin word "per fumus", meaning "through the smoke", since early perfumes consisted of burnt aromas, such as incense, as offerings to the gods and ancestors. The production of scents and essential oils, whose major use is to enhance pleasant smells and fragrances, is a very old tradition.

This art was known to many ancient civilizations worldwide: the Chinese, Hindus, Egyptians, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, and Israelites. Once a product limited only to the wealthy, the introduction of alcohol-based fragrances and the development of the industry at the end of the nineteenth century made perfumes more affordable for everyone.

Nowadays, the whole market for perfumery is worth 15.2 billion dollars, accounting for 0.09% of the world's trade. Let's look in-depth at the world's imports and exports of perfumes in 2020. The top exporter of perfumes, as imagined, is France, with a value of 4.49 billion. Indeed, over the centuries, thanks to their abundance of flowers, the French became the perfumers of the world. Following that, Spain ($1.55 billion), Germany ($1.35 billion), the United States ($1.12 billion), and Italy ($1.05 billion).

The main importers of the product in 2020 were the United States ($1.55 billion), Germany ($1.27 billion), the United Kingdom ($995 million), the Netherlands ($822 million), and Spain ($590 million).
