Lighting sets for Christmas trees: import and export
December 22nd 2022
On December 25th many people celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday and as a cultural and commercial event. In fact, Christmas was once a pagan celebration, but now it is mostly observed by Christians to remember the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.
Over the centuries, this recurrence evolved thanks to the different influences that made it the traditional celebration that we know today. While waiting for this day, people usually get prepared for it by buying gifts for their beloved ones to exchange on the long-awaited day, and also by decorating the places they live and work in with garlands, sprigs of mistletoe and Christmas trees.
Christmas trees are an important symbol of this holiday. They are usually decorated with ornaments, baubles, a topper and many lights. Strung on a Christmas tree for the first time in 1882, electric Christmas lights were invented by Edward H. Johnson and Thomas Edison. Bulbs and lights of different colors are placed on the tree, then plugged in and usually controlled by a timer.
In 2020, these lighting sets were the 1548th most traded product of the world, with a total trade of $1.42B. Their trade represents 0.0085% of total world trade, following the export decrease of -14.2%, from $1.66B to $1.42B.
In 2020 the top exporters of lighting sets for Christmas trees were China ($863M), Cambodia ($290M), Philippines ($70.3M), Netherlands ($56.3M), and Mexico ($24M). In the same year, the top importers were United States ($548M), Germany ($119M), Netherlands ($81.5M), United Kingdom ($80.8M), and Mexico ($41.7M).
