Moving forward to the fourteenth century, gloves became a fundamental item for the members of polite society and also for the majority of the lower classes. In fact, they weren’t just an accessory, but when worn at specific situations they could hide a symbolic meaning: from faith, to love, loyalty and even honor.
Used also to protect hands and keep them soft, the first gloves were usually made of leather. In 1500 new fabric types such as silk, satin, velvet, cotton, and linen became available, leading the way for softer and cheaper gloves, which became standard in 1600, when knitted cotton gloves took off.
Today, there are many types of gloves. However, knitted gloves were the 513th most traded product of the world in 2020, with a total trade of $4.53B. Trade in Knit Gloves represents 0.027% of total world trade.
In 2020, the biggest exporters were China ($2.3B), Sri Lanka ($338M), Vietnam ($273M), Pakistan ($217M), and Germany ($145M). In the same year, the top importers were United States ($964M), Japan ($378M), Germany ($368M), France ($226M), Belgium ($176M).
Lastly, between 2019 and 2020, the exports of knitted gloves grew the fastest in Netherlands ($13.8M), Poland ($8.57M), Vietnam ($8.49M), Austria ($5.68M), and Germany ($4.68M), while the fastest growing importers of Knit Gloves were Saudi Arabia ($7.41M), Kazakhstan ($6.73M), Chinese Taipei ($6.18M), Netherlands ($5.35M), and Switzerland ($5.19M).
