Knitted Gloves: import and export

Back in ancient Egypt, pharaohs used to wear some of the earliest recorded examples of gloves. These accessories usually represented a symbol of wealth also in the eras later, when Kings and noble men were buried with silk adorned gloves.

Moving forward to the fourteenth century, gloves became a fundamental item for the members of polite society and also for the majority of the lower classes. In fact, they weren’t just an accessory, but when worn at specific situations they could hide a symbolic meaning: from faith, to love, loyalty and even honor.

Used also to protect hands and keep them soft, the first gloves were usually made of leather. In 1500 new fabric types such as silk, satin, velvet, cotton, and linen became available, leading the way for softer and cheaper gloves, which became standard in 1600, when knitted cotton gloves took off.
