Hats: import and export
December 13th 2022
Women and men all around the world have been wearing hats for centuries. This fashion piece was firstly represented in Ancient Egypt, but it had a significant role also in later times, until our days.
There are many different types of hats that have been worn depending on the situation and time. In fact, some of them are made to cover the head of the person wearing it to protect it from the weather, while others are specifically produced to respect some traditions linked for example to religion, or to complete the uniform of precise workers. Wearing hats can also be a way to show someone’s social status.
Fabricated with materials like plastic, cotton, wool, or felt, hats have high numbers in terms of import and export. In 2020 they were the world's 1067th most traded product, with a total trade of $333M, representing 0.002% of total world trade.
In the same year, the top exporters of hats were China ($187M), Italy ($19.8M), Mexico ($18.3M), United States ($11M), and Vietnam ($9.29M), while United States ($76.8M), Japan ($25.7M), Germany ($24.8M), France ($16.1M), and United Kingdom ($15.6M) were the top importers. Also, between 2019 and 2020 the exports of hats decreased by -23.6%, from $436M to $333M.
