Global Innovation Index: an overview

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting and protecting intellectual property (IP) rights worldwide. WIPO was established in 1967 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in partnership with other organizations like Cornell University and INSEAD. The GII measures and ranks the innovation performance of countries around the world based on various indicators and criteria. The GII aims to provide policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders with insights into the innovation capabilities and potential of different countries. It helps them understand the factors contributing to innovation and identify areas for improvement. Countries are ranked based on their innovation performance, and the GII provides an overall ranking as well as rankings in specific subcategories. The top-ranking countries are considered leaders in innovation.

2023 Global Innovation Index

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released its Global Innovation Index for 2023, which assesses innovation levels across 132 different economies. This evaluation considers various factors, including human capital, institutions, technology, creative output, market sophistication, and business sophistication. The report notes that while innovation is still progressing, recent global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine have had an impact on the rankings, affecting several economies and industries.

Switzerland has once again claimed the top spot in the rankings, achieving a score of 67.6 out of 100. This marks the 13th time Switzerland has been recognized as the global leader in innovation. Sweden secured the second position, and the United States came in third.

China has notably improved its ranking and is now the 12th most innovative nation globally. This is an advancement from its 14th-place ranking in 2020 and 2019, and its 17th-place ranking in 2018. China also received recognition as the most innovative upper middle-income country, surpassing countries like Malaysia (ranked 36th overall) and Bulgaria (ranked 38th). In addition, India (ranked 40th overall) was recognized as the top innovator among lower middle-income countries, followed by Vietnam (ranked 46th) and Ukraine (ranked 55th).
