Germany: a look at the market

Germany is a country placed in the western region of Central Europe, and It’s the second most populous country in Europe after Russia, and the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany lies between the Baltic and North Sea to the north and the Alps to the south. Its sixteen constituent states are bordered by Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south and France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west.

 

Germany has been painted a picture of a great power with a strong economy; it has the largest economy in Europe, the world’s fourth largest economy by nominal GDP.

 As a global power in industrial, scientific and technological sectors, it is both the world’s third largest exporter and importer. It’s a developed country and It offers security, a universal health care system and a tuition-free university education. Furthermore, It has the third greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

ORIGINS

In September 2023 the exports of Germany were mainly from Foreign Countries (€29.3B), Baden-Württemberg (€20B), Bavaria (€19.9B), North Rhine-Westphalia (€18.5B), and Lower Saxony (€7.81B), while imports destinations were mainly North Rhine-Westphalia (€23.4B), Bavaria (€20.1B), Baden-Württemberg (€18.8B), Hesse (€10.2B), and Lower Saxony (€9.43B).

DESTINATIONS

In September 2023, Germany exported mostly to United States, which contributed significantly with exports worth €13.1 billion, France, whose exports amounted to €9.94 billion, Netherlands with a substantial export value of €9.21 billion, Poland  and China played a pivotal roles in the global export market with exports valued at €7.69 billion and €7.54 billion, respectively.

On the other hand, imported mostly from China (€12.8B), Netherlands (€8.24B), United States (€7.72B), Poland (€6.56B), and France (€5.74B).

In September 2023, the decrease in Germany's year-by-year exports was explained primarily by an decrease in exports to United States (€-2.27B or -14.8%), Austria (€-1.57B or -19.1%), and China (€-1.51B or -16.7%), and product exports decrease in Other semi-finished products (€-1.92B or -72.1%), Pharmaceutical products (€-1.84B or -17%), and Basic pharmaceutical products (€-1.47B or -63.1%). In September 2023, the decrease in Germany's year-by-year imports was explained primarily by an decrease in imports from Norway (€-5.47B or -78.3%), China (€-4.5B or -26%), and Netherlands (€-2.69B or -24.6%), and product imports decrease in Petroleum oil and petroleum gases (€-7.42B or -59.9%), Pharmaceutical products (€-2.47B or -30.7%), and Other semi-finished products (€-1.1B or -47%).
