France: a look at the market

 

France is a country located primarily in Western Europe, It includes overseas regions and territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, giving it one of the largest discontiguous exclusive economic zones in the world.

The vast majority of France’s territory and population is situated in Western Europe and is called “Metropolitan France”, to different it from the country’s various overseas polities. It’s bordered by the North Sea in the north, the English Channel in the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

Since 2016, France is divided into 18 administrative regions: 13 regions in metropolitan France (including Corsica), and five overseas.

The regions are further subdivided into 101 departments, which are numbered mainly alphabetically. The department number is used in postal codes and was formerly used on vehicle registration plates.

 

 

ABOUT ECONOMY

France has a mixed market economy, consists in sizeable government involvement and economic diversity. It’s currently the world’s 9th largest by purchasing power parity (PPP), the 7th largest by nominal GDP and the second largest in the European Union by both metrics. France is considered an economic power, with membership in the Group of Seven leading industrialised countries, the OECD and the Group of Twenty largest economies.

EXPORTS

The top exports of France are Planes, Helicopters, and/or Spacecraft ($35.2B), Packaged Medicaments ($27.2B), Cars ($20.7B), Motor vehicles; parts and accessories (8701 to 8705) ($13.5B), and Wine ($13.2B), exporting mostly to Germany with a substantial export value of $74.1 billion, Italy which contributed significantly with exports worth $46 billion, Belgium whose exports amounted to $43.8 billion, United States and Spain played important roles in the global export market with exports valued at $42.1 billion and $41.6 billion, respectively.

 

In 2021, France was the world's biggest exporter of Planes, Helicopters, and/or Spacecraft ($35.2B), Wine ($13.2B), Beauty Products ($10.8B), Perfumes ($6.23B), and Bovine ($1.6B)

 

IMPORTS

The top imports of France are Cars ($40.3B), Refined Petroleum ($23.1B), Petroleum Gas ($22.5B), Packaged Medicaments ($19.6B), and Crude Petroleum ($16.1B), importing mostly from Germany, with a substantial import value of $119 billion, Italy which contributed significantly with imports worth $61.6 billion,  Belgium, whose imports amounted to $59.9 billion, Spain and Netherlands played pivotal roles in the global import 59market, with imports valued at $59 billion and $57.1 billion, respectively.

 

In 2021, France was the world's biggest importer of Non-fillet Fresh Fish ($2.67B), Glands and Other Organs ($1.08B), Nuclear Reactors ($709M), Other Metal Fasteners ($402M), and Agglomerated Cork ($213M)

GROWTH

In Fourth Quarter 2022, the increase in France's year-by-year exports was explained firstly by an increase in exports to Italy (€3.24B or 30.1%), United States (€2.81B or 30.2%), and Germany (€1.78B or 9.75%), and product exports increase in Other transport equipment (€4.48B or 38.4%), hydrocarbons (€3.52B or 330%), and Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (€1.93B or 16.7%). In Fourth Quarter 2022, the increase in France's year-by-year imports was explained primarily by an increase in imports from United States (€5.93B or 61.2%), Belgium (€4.61B or 32.6%), and Spain (€2.87B or 25.3%), and product imports increase in hydrocarbons (€11.8B or 102%), Products of coke and refined petroleum (€3.54B or 47.1%), and Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (€3.09B or 18.7%).

 

INQUIRING MIND

France hosts "the world's biggest annual sporting event", the Tour de France. Other popular sports played in France include: footballjudotennis, rugby and pétanque. France has hosted events such as the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and will host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The country also hosted the 1960 European Nations' CupUEFA Euro 1984UEFA Euro 2016 and 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Stade de France in Saint-Denis is France's largest stadium and was the venue for the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2007 Rugby World Cup finals. Since 1923, France is famous for its 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car endurance race. Several major tennis tournaments take place in France, including the Paris Masters and the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. French martial arts include Savate and Fencing.
