Located in the South Pacific, Fiji is a set of Islands originally inhabited by Polynesians and Melanesians.
In the 19th century, Europeans landed in the islands and started a war to gain control of them. In 1874 Fijian chiefs made an offer of cession to Britain, which proclaimed its possession of the islands. After around one hundred years, Fiji became an independent country in 1970 and then switched between times of democracy and military dictatorship.

The economy of Fiji
Fiji is one of the most developed and connected of the Pacific island economies. Its revenue is mostly based on tourism and remittances from Fijians working abroad. The islands are also important exporters of bottled water and sugar.
Looking at numbers, the top exports of Fiji are water ($127M), processed fish ($84.8M), gold ($62.3M), raw sugar ($56.5M), and fuel wood ($27.3M), exporting mostly to United States ($244M), Australia ($131M), New Zealand ($41.8M), United Kingdom ($30.8M), and Japan ($27M).
At the same time, Fiji can count on China ($321M), New Zealand ($256M), Australia ($210M), Singapore ($190M), and South Korea ($130M) for the import of refined petroleum ($264M), wheat ($48.8M), non-fillet frozen fish ($46M), broadcasting equipment ($37M), and cars ($26.8M).
In 2020 Fiji was the number 164 economy in the world in terms of total exports and the number 166 in total imports.
