A CRIF BÜRGEL's study about women

A CRIF BÜRGEL's study shows that Germany is at the first place for women in management positions

World Women's Day: East Germany leads the way for women in management positions / Chairman of the Supervisory Board: 10% women at the head of the supervisory body

The percentage of women in management positions in Germany is 22.9%. This is revealed by a published evaluation of the information service provider CRIFBÜRGEL, done on 2.3 million leadership positions in more than one million companies for the World Women's Day. In March 2018, the rate was at a similar level of 22.6%.

The East German federal states continue to play a pioneering role in the topic of the female quota. With a female quota of 29.1%, Brandenburg ranks top in Germany, followed by Saxony (28%) and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (27.7%). There is a need to catch up with regard to the proportion of women, above all Baden-Württemberg (18%) and Bavaria (19.6%).

Obviously, women still have a heavier status in large companies. According to the figures of CRIFBÜRGEL, the women's quota on executive floors only exceeds the 20 percent mark (26.2%) for small companies with up to 10 employees. The larger the company - measured by the number of employees - the lower the proportion of female bosses. For companies with more than 1,000 employees, the female quota is only 15.5%. Similarly, the proportion of women in companies is related to the condition of sales size. The highest proportion of women in management positions are companies with a turnover below 1 million euros (24.4%). Thereafter, the proportion of women drops continuously with increasing sales. For companies with a turnover between 50 and 100 million, only one in ten leadership positions.

In addition, there are significant differences in women's management positions, depending on the industry. Women are the most represented in the top positions in the health sector with a share of 38.1 percent. Also in trade (26.7 percent) and in publishing (24.3 percent), an above-average number of women work on the executive floor. However, women in executive positions are underrepresented in mechanical engineering (9.5 percent) and in construction (10 percent).

CRIFBÜRGEL also analyzed Supervisory Board positions and the positions of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board independently for the first time. While the quota of women in supervisory boards is 19.6 percent, only one in ten supervisory board presidencies is occupied by one woman (10.8 percent).

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (26.3 percent) and Berlin (25.2 percent) are leaders in the women's quota on supervisory boards. By contrast, Saarland reports the lowest percentage with 17.1 percent female supervisory boards. A detailed analysis of the positions of supervisory board chairpersons shows that the proportion of women in this body is highest in Brandenburg (19.1 percent) and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (18.8 percent). In Baden-Württemberg (8.3 percent), Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia (9.5 percent each), Bavaria (9.3 percent) and Hamburg (9.5 percent), the share of women is at the top of the list Control Panel at less than 10 percent.

And another fun fact: The most common female names in leadership positions are Sabine, Petra, Monika, Andrea and Gabriele.

For the analysis, CRIFBÜRGEL evaluated 2,362,965 executive positions in 1,047,031 companies (as of 7.3.2019). The positions are managing directors, supervisory board members and chairmen, managing partners as well as executive board members and chairmen. 67,481 management board positions and 16,259 management positions were analyzed for the positions of the supervisory board members.
