Coffee: import and export

Coffee is a popular and widely consumed beverage around the world. It is made from the roasted seeds, or beans, of the Coffea plant. The most commonly used species of Coffea for coffee production are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, also known as Arabica and Robusta. The origins of coffee can be traced back to Ethiopia, where the practice of brewing coffee dates back centuries. From there, coffee spread to the Arabian Peninsula and eventually to Europe and the Americas. Coffee has a rich cultural history and is often associated with social gatherings, conversations, and relaxation. It is commonly consumed as a morning drink or as a social beverage during breaks or meetings

In 2021, the leading exporters of coffee were Brazil, Switzerland, Colombia, Germany, and Vietnam, with respective export values of $6.04 billion, $3.36 billion, $3.22 billion, $2.95 billion, and $2.34 billion. The top importers of coffee in the same year were the United States, Germany, Belgium, France, and Italy, with import values of $6.86 billion, $3.81 billion, $2.14 billion, $2.12 billion, and $1.89 billion, respectively.

Coffee ranked as the 124th most traded product globally in 2021, with a total trade value of $36 billion. Between 2020 and 2021, coffee exports experienced a significant growth rate of 16.3%, increasing from $30.9 billion to $36 billion. Coffee trade accounted for approximately 0.17% of the total world trade.

To summarize, Brazil was the largest exporter of coffee in 2021, while the United States was the largest importer. Coffee trade saw substantial growth during that period and constituted a small percentage of the overall global trade.
